2009 Memorial Tournament
Saturday, April 11 - Bethesda Park
Thanks to all of the teams and players that came
out and played in the Memorial Tournament. We had 12 teams participate
from GA, NC, SC, AL and TN (60 Division, 65
Division and 70 Division). The Executive Committee
appreciates your support of the tournament honoring league players
and spouses that have passed away.
The tournament was a success after a "slow"
start due to rain the night before. One field was dry enough to
start on time, but we had to delay the start of the games on the
other 2 fields an hour to do some "field maintenance".
Unfortunately, the bases
had been set at 70 feet and the extra 5 feet does make a difference
for players over 60. The good thing was the weather was cool and
held for the rest of day. So it wasn't the normal "hot"
Georgia weather where the extra 5 feet would have been unbearable
in the afternoon. We were able to finish all games by 6:30
p.m.
The proceeds from the 2009 Memorial Tournament was
donated to the Bethesda Senior Center.
THANKS to the following individuals who
helped make the tournament a success this year!
- Tena Stanfield brought her camera and was the
"official" team photographer. She also helped keep score
for the 60 Division Teams.
- Kathy Walker bought the donuts and donated
her time in the morning doing team registration.
- Elton Lewis stayed all day keeping score for
the 70 Division Teams. It was great seeing Elton again.
- Cindy Acker donated her time in the afternoon
keeping score for the 65 Division Teams.
- Larry Wilson donated his time in the afternoon
helping out with trash detail.
- Ed Davis recruited the 60 and 65 teams that
participated this year.
- Norm Lebedin recruited the 70 teams that articipated
this year.
- Bert McDade donated his time in the morning
helping to set up and making some trips to Walmart to pick up
items to help with the field maintenance.
- Ed Davis, Peter Mariolis and Ed Brown, Jr.
stayed to the very end and helped lock up.
- Freeman Davis, Best Friend Park, took an early
morning S.O.S. call to help us get a contact with the Bethesda
Park maintenance crew out to drag the 2 fields.
- Norcross Masonic Lodge operated the concession
stand for us, made sure ice/water was in the dugouts, and cleaned
up the trash.
SPECIAL THANKS
to Curtis Caldwell, Norm Lebedin, Larry Milleville, Don
Griffiths, Tena Stanfield and Harry Harrison from the League
and also to Jason from Bethesda Park in working
on the 2 fields with the standing water to get them playable. They
were out there with buckets, brooms and mops moving the water off
the field.
If I missed anyone that helped out, please
let me know so I can add you to the list to be recognized.
This was definitely a team effort this year!!

Les
Boswell's Prayer
Dear God:
Help me
be a good sport in this game of Life. I don't ask for an easy place
in the line up. Put me anywhere you need me. I only ask that I can
give you 100% of everything I have. If all the hard drives seem
to come my way, I thank you for the compliment.
Help me
remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle.
And help me, Lord to accept the bad breaks as part of the game.
May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do. Help
me to study the book so I'll know the rules.
Finally,
God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I am benched
for sickness or old age, help me to accept that is part of the game
too. Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw
deal.
And when
I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels. All I want is to
believe in my heart that I player as well as I could and that I
didn't let you down. Amen
