MASSL teams participated in the Second Annual All Star Game on Saturday, June 17, 2006, at Tolleson Park in Smyrna. The tournament is a gathering of the Senior Leagues in the Metro Atlanta area (Cobb County, Hobgood and Gwinnett-Dekalb Counties). This is picnic-type tournament where everyone can have fun and fellowship. No awards are given, and every player that participates is a winner.

Two teams from each of the 3 senior leagues participate. Players from the MASSL Wednesday Night League and Tuesday/Thursday Night League were recommended by the League Team Managers. The final selection for the teams was made by the All Star Team Managers based on age, availability and position played.

We consider all of our players to be "All Stars". We would have liked to have all of them participate in the tournament, but we were limited to 14 players per team. Players from each of our 8 teams were represented. Ben Wiechman, Mack Roper, Norm Lebedin and Fred Molnar determined the final roster for each team. Ben managed the Under 60 Team and Fred managed the 60+ Team.

Because of the interest by players to participate in this inter-league tournament, the three organizations will discuss the option of each league having 3 teams for 2007.

2006 Results

In the 60+ play, the Hobgood team was undefeated; our MASSL team came in second; and Smyrna was third. Nate Henry was selected as MVP for the 60+ team. Nate made some "awesome" plays that kept runners from scoring; and he hit a triple, double and single in one game. According to a teammate, "the triple should have been a home run, but you know how it is when you get "old" - Nate just ran out of steam at third".

In the under 60 play, the Hobgood team was also undefeated; Smyrna came in second; and our MASSL team was third. Howard Wilcox and J. W. Austin were selected as Co-MVPs for the under 60 team. Howard made some unbelievable catches in the outfield and got on base almost every time he came up to bat. J. W. stopped hard hit balls down the third base line and consistently hit the ball to score runs.
