In Memorium

Through the years, we have been fortunate to know people who have become part of the fabric of our lives and witness to the story we write through our shared love of softball.  We honor their lives and memories and recognize those among us who embody the best in who we are.

Our Friends

Life's journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body,

but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy Cow...What a ride!"

Softball Player Prayer

Dear God:

Help me be a good sport in this game of Life. I don't ask for an easy place in the line up. Put me anywhere you need me. I only ask that I can give you 100% of everything I have. If all the hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment.

Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle. And help me, Lord to accept the bad breaks as part of the game. May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do. Help me to study the book so I'll know the rules.

Finally, God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I am benched for sickness or old age, help me to accept that is part of the game too. Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw deal.

And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels. All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that I didn't let you down.

Amen

You Can't Put More Time on the Clock

Kathy Walker

We all have an expiration date.

If God showed you the score board and you knew exactly how much time you had left, how would you be living.  All games have a time limit.  In softball, games run on 7 innings or a running clock of an hour, whichever comes first.  The clock never stops.  I have heard teammates say when someone makes an out, an error or leaves the bases loaded when they make the last out in an inning as a batter, “Shake it off, that’s OK, we’ve got time to make it up, it’s just the beginning of the game.

However in the 7th inning or at the magical hour when it’s almost up, you can’t stop the clock or keep the inning advancing.  The clock keeps on going.  We feel the sense of urgency at this time and then the game is over and probably lost.  But if we had more time, we most likely could have turned the game around.  We didn’t take the game seriously at the beginning and kept telling ourselves we had more time until time ran out.

We are programmed so much in our lives to waste time with social media, with so many distractions that we take our focus off of what truly matters in our life.  No matter how much you try to stop it, this earth, as much as we may want it to stop…it’s going to keep spinning.  People are going to keep living and time is going to keep ticking.

You’re going to get to a point when your game of life hits 0 or somebody you love game of life hits 0 and no matter how hard you try, how hard you pray, no matter how much you cry, you can’t put more time on the clock.  You can’t, it’s done.

What happens then is we live in regret because we didn’t cherish the time, we had with ourselves, and the time we had with our dreams, the time we had with our children, the time we had with our friends, the time we had with our loved ones.

You are not old based upon your birth date; you are old based upon your death date.  None of us know when that day is going to come.

Bottom Line:   Everyone has an expiration date!!!!!!!

Around The Corner

Poem by Charles Hanson Towne

Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.

And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.

And he rang mine but we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on Jim
Just to show that I'm thinking of him",
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner, yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir," "Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.
